Surprisingly, there’s not just one simple answer to this common question. Initial press releases from Japan around the initial debut of the CR-V specified that the name stood for “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle”. However, the press in the United Kingdom began to note that CR-V stood for “Compact Recreational Vehicle”. Other sources have listed the CR-V abbreviation as “Civic Renaissance Model X”, likely in reference to the pre-production development of the vehicle. Despite the conflicting explanations, buyers continued to choose the Honda CR-V over the competition and that tradition continues to this day!
